What is a Blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty, which is sometimes referred to as cosmetic eyelid surgery, is a procedure that is used to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Eyelid surgery is used to treat:
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids
- Loose, sagging, or excess skin that hides the contour of the upper eyelid or can impair vision
- Excess skin or wrinkles of the lower eyelid
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness
These conditions can appear due to heredity or as part of the aging process. Regardless of the cause, eyelid surgery can revive the area surrounding the eye giving a more rested and alert appearance.

How is a Blepharoplasty done?
Like all cosmetic procedures, every eyelid surgery requires an individualized approach. Your surgeon will evaluate your condition to determine the best approach for your surgery. Often a lowered brow may be a contributing factor and may influence the surgical plan for rejuvenation.
In general, droopy upper eyelids can be corrected using an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This incision then allows the surgeon to reposition fat deposits and remove excess skin.
Incisions used in eyelid surgery are well concealed by the natural structures of the eyelid region.
